Migraines Q & A
What are the symptoms of a migraine?
Migraine symptoms are more severe than those of other types of headaches. Common migraine symptoms include:
- Throbbing pain, usually on only one side of the head
- Sensitivity to light, sound, and smell
- Numbness and tingling in the face, jaw, or arms
- Fatigue and irritability
- Nausea and vomiting
- Nasal congestion
- Neck pain and stiffness
Migraines typically last 4-72 hours and may be preceded by an aura, or a sense that a migraine is about to begin. Auras may include food cravings, muscle tension, stiffness, and visual disturbances.
How are headaches and migraines different?
Headaches have less severe symptoms than migraines and generally don’t last as long. However, chronic daily headaches or having headaches more than 15 days out of the month can be debilitating as well. Migraines are considered a neurological condition in which the normal pain pathways in your brain are altered. This may be due to genetics, hormonal factors, fluctuations in weather, or dietary habits. Headaches occur for a variety of reasons, many of which are related to dehydration, low blood sugar, muscle tension, blood flow issues arising from high blood pressure or exertion when exercising. Headaches may also be secondary to another medical condition, like chronic kidney disease or an infection.
